In Britain and Azerbaijan women gained the ability to vote in 1918, in Oman it was not till 2003. In Saudi Arabia and UAE, women still cant, and in some places its not exactly easy to exercise this basic right for some men and many women. Go down a little on this page and find March of the Women, one of the chief suffragette anthems. By the estimable Edith Smyth, who conducted suffragettes in the prison yard with her tooth brush from the window of Holloway Prison, it is one of my desert island disks, though possibly in a fuller and more orchestrated recording than this one, but you get the message. I will be wearing my purple, green and white in 2018 and hope to sing it with some companions to honour our courageous foremothers who won us this right. 52composers/ethel-smyth.html
