In Chapter 46 of Genesis, Jacob sets out for Egypt with all his possessions. With him are all his sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters, all his descendants, about sixty six people in all. They also take all their livestock and all their personal belongings. Jacob rides along with all the wives and children, in one of the wagons that Pharaoh had provided. When Jacob arrives first at Beersheba, he offers sacrifices to God. That night, God speaks to Jacob in a vision. God tells Jacob not to be afraid about moving to Egypt, that He will make his family a great nation, and that He will go with them and bring them back again. God also tells Jacob that he will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with him to close his eyes. When they arrive in Egypt, Jacob sends Judah ahead to Joseph to get directions to the region of Goshen. And when they finally arrive in Goshen, Joseph travels in his chariot to meet them there. Joseph embraces his father Jacob and he weeps, holding his father for a long time. Finally, Jacob says to Joseph, "Now I am ready to die, since I have seen your face again and know you are still alive." Joseph tells his family that he is going to go to the Pharaoh to tell him that his entire family is now here from Canaan and they brought all their livestock with them. Joseph asks his family, that when they go before Pharaoh and he asks what their occupation is, tell him that we your servants have raised livestock all our lives, like our ancestors have done. Joseph tells them to say this to Pharaoh because Egyptians despise shepherds.
