In Gandhis own embodied political practice, fasting, the embrace of voluntary poverty, or the performance of stigmatizing labor, was a form of upper-caste atonement.Cleansing the upper caste-self of caste arrogance required a fast-unto-death even when it implicated others in the ptactice of one,s ethics. Ambedkar noted that such penitential politics inflicted a violence of its own, and did so in two ways : first by failing to recognize the Dalits(italics) quest for dignity and social recognition, and second by redefining Dalits-- in their quest for political autonomy - as the perpetrators of social violence rather than its historical victims.
