In March 2012, the UK Government stated its commitment to bring in a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in England: The Government will seek to introduce primary legislation at the earliest opportunity to achieve its much-stated desire to ban travelling circuses from using performing wild animals.* Today, Her Majesty the Queen delivered her Speech at the State Opening of Parliament. Traditionally, the Queen’s Speech lays out the Government’s plans for legislation to be debated in the forthcoming Parliamentary session. Unfortunately, despite indications that it would be included, there was no mention of a Bill to bring in a ban on wild animals in travelling circuses. The Born Free Foundation is outraged at this apparent about-face by the Government. So, where does this leave Born Free, our campaign partners at the RSPCA, BVA and CAPS, the majority of the public and Parliamentarians; all of whom are united in their conviction that the practice of using wild animals to perform in travelling circuses must end?
