In Memory Of Four7 Neelan Munnick, 19, also known as 4our7 (Four Seven), was driving up Marock Road with a friend in his bakkie when a car hit them on the driver’s side as they were turning into Stanford Road. Munnick, who lived in September Crescent, Salsoneville, was declared dead on arrival at Livingstone Hospital. “We were completely dumbstruck when we got the news,” his father, Martin, said. “I do not think any parent ever expects to get a phone call telling them their son was just in a fatal accident. “Neelan’s love for making music and playing at clubs and parties often kept him out of the house late, and we were never concerned for his safety because he always kept us informed about where he was and what time he would be home. “But last night, we never got that call,” he said, his eyes brimming with tears. Munnick’s friends recognised his bakkie at the crash scene and contacted his parents. He had already been taken to the hospital when they arrived. Police spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder said Munnick was the only person who died in the accident. Munnick’s love for music started as a boy when his father played guitar around the house. He had started making a name for himself as a housemusic DJ in recent years, with his music played by the likes of 5FM’s DJ Fresh and Euphonik. His first music video was launched on the music channel Channel O last Monday and another one of his singles was played on the same channel for the first time the following day. He and his music partner, Luke Mains, 21, also known as Luke M, had just returned from playing gigs in Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Stellenbosch, and had a tour to Namibia booked for the end of the month. Martin said: “We talked about everything, and he told me he did not want to be a Port Elizabeth celebrity. “He wanted to achieve more than just local fame and was already doing it despite his young age.” Munnick’s brother, Sean, 25, known for being one half of the house duo MunniBrotherz, has been making music for about eight years and believes his brother had the potential to become famous. “He use to follow us everywhere when we played and he picked up a lot from listening to our music,” Sean said. “Then, when he started to make his own music, we played some of it at our gigs and it got great feedback.” Besides his love of music, Munnick also had his sights set on a career in the construction industry and was already enrolled to study civil engineering at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University next year. Events company 2 Smooth Productions’ Russell Rensburg described Munnick as “the next big thing to come out of Port Elizabeth” and said his death was a great loss for the music industry. “National and international acts had caught onto his sound and he was on the radar of some world- renowned DJs. “He could have been the Loyiso or Zahara of DJ-ing,” Rensburg said. – Riaan Marais
