In Mid December 2013 violence broke out in Juba South Sudan. Government blamed forces loyal to former vice President Riek Machar of trying to stage a coup. Machar denied. Anyway violence spread quickly across the country. Foreigners were evacuated. In Nairobi, Kampala and Addis there was pandemonium. LAPPSET was under threat. Kenyatta, Haille and Museveni immediately called for a summit and vowed to protect Salva Kiir as legitimate President. For the neighbours the issue was , Who was funding Machar and what was the motive? IN May John Kerry visited Addis and said United States wanted an interim government of national unity, (familiar?) and now during US Africa Summit, Kerry said United States recognises Kiir as the legitimate elected president.
