In North Carolina, 21% of mothers of children ages 0 - 3 work in low wage jobs (compared to 13.5% of the overall population). With the average yearly cost of child care for young children in NC at $8,868 (the average in-state tuition cost for an NC undergrad is approximately $8400 per year, for comparison), I would guess plenty of mothers with young kids may need jobs that can offer more flexible hours (night, weekends), which is what fast-food restaurants can offer. The wages are low, though, and not really enough. Those angry about food stamp and EITC recipients might want to take it up with the restaurants, whose low wages we subsidize with these government programs. Are those shareholders who are enjoying record profits concerned about giving those tax dollars back? I didnt think so. The local chapter of Raise Up will be participating in the #FastFoodGlobal strike on Thursday, May 15, to demand fair wages for fast food workers and the right to organize for better working conditions. There will be protests outside fast food establishments in Durham at 6am and 10am that day (look here later for more details) and a solidarity gathering at 1:30pm at the Method Road Community Center in Raleigh. Please join in if you can, and show what real support for mothers look like (hint: it doesnt look like a $3.99 hallmark card).
