In Nov, I flew to Perth to coordinate a TV film crew telling the story of this amazing young lady. Georgia, 19, was the youngest cancer patient in Australia to have a bone marrow transplant at 6 months old. When she relapsed a few years later, her mum was told to say goodbye. Mum begged for anything that could prolong her life by just a few weeks so they could take Georgia on one last holiday. Georgia was put on steroids. Miraculously, she started to improve. Then they tried something never before done in Australia: a second bone marrow transplant. Georgia is one of a tiny worldwide number of survivors of two bone marrow transplants. But her body was nuked. Her hair will never grow normally. Her growth is stunted to that of a child. The day before I met her she had extensive tooth surgery; she still has her baby ones. Despite this, Georgia was resolute on volunteering at our camp to be a companion to a young girl recently diagnosed with cancer (Meg, below). This incredible, uplifting story will air on ABCs national 7:30 program (most likely tomorrow at 7:30- tune in!)
