In October 1932, a post newspaper article, with the headline “Phantom Rider Desires Automobiles,” said Fort Benning MP squads reported seeing a headless horseman, presumably the ghost of British agent Col. John Tate who was killed during the Revolutionary War and buried on what is now Main Post. Tate’s ghost was riding a big black charge down Benning Road toward Torch Hill. In recent weeks, the MPs said, the ghost was blamed for five automobile accidents. If youd like to learn more about Col. John Tate (and his ghost!) reserve your seat on the free monthly Benning Bus Tour today. The October tour is all booked, but were reserving now for November 20. The tour, from 8:30am-2pm, includes free breakfast and lunch, free child care, and an awesome goodie bag valued at more than $300. For more information, send an email to benningmwr@gmail. We appreciate our sponsor, Ranger Joes, for covering the cost of this event.
