In Papua New Guinea, one in four women died in childbirth, and there was only one midwife for every 1000 births. Soroptimist International are working to reduce these figures, the "Birthing In the Pacific" siswp.org/Birthing-in-the-Pacific1/ project aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality, through education, and up skilling of nurses and midwifes. Worldwide Soroptimist International has raised $471,000 for the success of this project. Soroptimist International Nelson Club has decided to assist this project with goods instead of money, Soroptimist member Wendy Logan heard the that the ship Morobe Rainforest was about to leave for Papua New Guinea empty. SI member Raylene Cresswell became the project organiser asking SI Lae what it needed, a list of medical and birthing supplies were requested, Raylene then set about collecting donated goods, medical supplies to send with the Morobe Rainforest to Lae in Papua New Guinea.
