In Pitigliano a new active group was formed for the safeguarding of the Vie Cave and its surrounding territory, a unique heritage of rare beauty and a major turist attraction. A Facebook page was inaugurated to promote awareness on the subject and to reach out as far as possible through the internet web. The promoters behind this facebook page are organized in a Committee to protect and preserve the Vie Cave of Pitigliano . There are dozens of Vie Cave around Pitigliano, special paths carved into the tufa walls often twenty meters high , they have always been part of the history of Pitigliano and its territory (there are many also in the municipality of Sorano) . The Vie Cave were excavated for the first time by the Etruscans and its unclear whether the Vie Cave represented only simple communication routes or even sacred paths (in the vicinity necropolis have been found). Until recently theyve always been used as a means of communication before becoming a valuable tourist attraction. At present, the Tourist Office in Pitigliano confermed tha some Vie Cave around the town are open to the public, including the archaeological park of Cava Via Gradone dedicated to professor Alberto Manzi (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Manzi) Many of the Vie Cave open to the public are nevertheless in desperate need of major consolidation and maintenance, and because of lack of funding, the local authority is helpless. The rest of the Vie Cave not mentioned in the official tour guides and not specified on institutional web sites, are in a state of neglect and are likely to disappear in the near future. The birth of a serious committee, that solely deals with the problem, represents a decisive step towards the preservation of these unique archaeological sites, and in doing so, the committee hopes to stir up important channels which in turn will serve to save the history of the territory.
