In Saanich and many other parts of Metro Victoria, we have standard lane widths of 12 feet. This article clearly identifies why they should 10 feet in urban areas. I can think of two serious issues in the Gorge Tillicum neighbourhood where these wide lanes negatively impact on all of us. Both Tillicum Road and Gorge Road from Tillicum to Harriet are four lanes that are 12 feet wide. First, it has been clear for some time that 4 lanes are not needed and that bike lanes with better sidewalks are in need. With the extra wide lanes we end up with an 85th percentile speed of 63 to 67 km/h with no enforcement. This is simply no longer acceptable. As the Mayor of Saanich recently said weve been doing things the same way for 28 years so maybe it is time for a review. Well, it more than time for a review, it is time for changes!
