In Seattle, a serious car/bike crash in a so-called protected bike - TopicsExpress

In Seattle, a serious car/bike crash in a so-called protected bike lane. Car turned left into a parking lot. The city has since eliminated 50 feet of street parking, next to a parking-garage entrance where the crash happened, said SDOT spokesman Rick Sheridan. In addition, some kind of warning signs will be added, reminding cyclists to slow through that block, he said. So, to make this protected bike lane (official name: cycle track) safer, they are removing parking (that as, the physical barrier that was supposed to provide the protection in the first place, except it doesnt at intersections), to make it easier for motorists and cyclists to see each other (which they could do a lot easier if they were in the same travel lane), and urging cyclists to go even slower than they already do (except its on a downhill, where we can naturally go fast, maybe even keep up with [motor] traffic, which everyone incorrectly thinks we have to do to ride with car traffic). More tinkering says it all. You violate the rules of movement in the first place, you create crossing conflicts which keep requiring more band-aids to fix.
