In Star Wars episode III, they never reconciled the issue of the prophecy. Was it misinterpreted or just wrong? The chosen one was to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. Everyone assumed that meant destroying the Sith would bring balance, but I think the prophecy referred to two distinct events (in reverse order) rather than a cause and effect. At the time there were only two Sith but hundreds of Jedi, which doesnt strike me as balanced. By slaying the younglings and hunting down the remaining Jedi, he brought balance to the Force. By martyring himself to save Luke, he destroyed the Sith.
