In a bid to attract more inbound tourism, the Mozambique government recently approved the creation of a new integrated tourism resort zone in the Northern Province of Nampula. The tourism zone will encompass Crusse and Jamali Islands as well as the adjacent mainland, covering a total area of 1 750 hectares. Government spokesperson, Alberto Nkutumula, said in a press release that the government aimed to create poles of development in areas with the potential for developing integrated projects, particularly in the field of hospitality and tourism. He says the plan is to build luxury hotels as well as tourism products such as a marina, a casino and a golf course. “The vision is to transform the area of Nacala, Mossuril, Matibane, Crusse and Jamali into one of the most attractive zones for luxury tourism in the world.” He says an international tender will be held to appoint a tourism operator for the new resort. The tourism industry in Mozambique has welcomed the new development saying there is definitely room for more hospitality establishments in the country. Scott Walsh, GM at Vilanculos Beach Lodge, says he expects that the Nampula development will mainly target the corporate market, even though it is situated in a high tourism area. “Pemba is facing a similar situation. Pemba beach Hotel was first built to cater for holidaymakers and to be a base camp for the other three Rani lodges in the area (two island and one mainland safari lodge). “It is now mainly filled with businessmen and contractors as the country is expanding Pemba harbour to cater for all the resources from Tete.” Walsh adds that, with all the increase in business there is also need for hotels in the area. by Dorine Reinstein @ TU
