In a clear indication of his expanding role, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has initiated one-to-one interactions with cabinet ministers to review their performances and the status of implementation of the party’s 2009 election manifesto. Congress sources said the exercise covering party’s ministers has been kicked off in view of the approaching general elections. Apart from seeking progress reports from them and evaluating their performances, Gandhi is also focusing on the UPA government’s unfinished agenda. The unfulfilled promises could become a part of the 2014 manifesto, a senior minister said. Though the emphasis is on social sector ministries, he has also met health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and is likely to meet railways minister Mallikarjuna Kharge soon. On Gandhi’s initiative, the Congress party has also asked its state units to provide their inputs for the 2014 manifesto. “The central manifesto panel will assess the inputs and incorporate the important ones in the poll document,” a party functionary said.
