In a day when both modernity and postmodernity have had an effect - TopicsExpress

In a day when both modernity and postmodernity have had an effect on the Churchs apologetic and witness in the world, I believe we need to stand even more fully upon the essential foundation blocks of the “faith once delivered” (Jude 1:3). Or, as our brother J.B. Phillips penned it in his translation of Jude: “I feel compelled to make my letter to you an earnest appeal to put up a real fight for the faith which has been once and for all committed to those who belong to Christ.” As we seek the Lord for ways to meet the very real challenges of our century, we must be careful not to react against our own historical tenants in order to revive ourselves. Instead, what we need most fully (I believe) is a revival of biblical impartation in our midst, not a change in the way we talk about the Bible (or the gospel). As I look around at the sad state of the American church, I see the greatest and deepest growth (a growth which includes a revived heart for culturally relevant mission) taking place in those places where a conservative view of God’s word—and a renewed faith in its essential efficacy—is being re-affirmed. Those denominations which are hemorrhaging are those which have caved in to the social egalitarianism of a post-Christian worldview. American evangelicalism is in great danger of following the mainline denominations into the pit of post-modernism. We don’t need to sit at their table! We have a Table in heaven. Let’s talk about that Invitation, and how to impact this world accordingly.
