In a documentary called Room 237 now on Netflix, its claimed that you can find clues to a few surprising hidden messages in the movie The Shining by Stanley Kubrick. Meanings that go far beyond a horror film. There is a scene where Danny is playing on the rug in the hallway outside room 237 and, as he stands up, we see he has Apollo 11 on his sweater. The pattern in the rug in the hallway as he stands exactly matches an aerial shot of launch pad 39A from which Apollo 11 took off, but then...after Danny is on his feet...the pattern in the carpet changes in a way that you wont notice unless watching for it. Nicholsons speech or rant to his wife Wendy starts with concern for Danny (or is it Apollo 11)? As she backs up on the staircase Kubrick is perhaps telling us in the audience something hes wanted to scream out loud for a lon time. Have you ever thought about my responsibilities to my employers? I have signed a contract, have you ever thought about what would happen to my future if I fail to live up to my responsibilities? Kubrick then mocks the audience (represented by his wife in the movie) about what they know or dont know, and how theyve had their whole life to think about it, what good is a few more seconds going to do? Mr. Halloran tells Danny very early in The Shining that, Youre going to see a lot of things, but theyre like pictures in a book...theyre not real. Tang is on the shelves of the storage rooms and almost always prominently seen. The mysterious room 237 was originally supposed to be room 217. Kubrick changed the number, and it happens to correspond to a large studio space where the lunar landing could have been faked. Yet, Kubrick had people on site at the actual hotel for three full months. After the movie came out, they had to release a statement explaining why Kubrick changed the number of the hotel room from 217 (originally in the script) to 237. Kubrick said the hotel was afraid that after seeing the movie, no one would want to stay in room 217. Yet, there is no room 217 in the hotel. And there is a long list of other hidden messages that are critical about the government in general...deceiving people, committing genocide like the slaughter of the American Indian, watching people closely to make sure you do what youre supposed to do...too much to list. But fascinating stuff to ponder considering, as they point out early in the film, Stanley Kubrick had an IQ of 200. He was a brilliant director. Yet, The Shining is filled with inconsistencies and seeming mistakes...or are they clues? Lastly, is Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey, shot in 1968, a demonstration of how the moon landing could be faked? The narrators are quick to say they are NOT denying that we went to the moon. They are only questioning what we saw on television and whether or not it was live footage from the moon, or Kubriks well staged presentation of what was happening perhaps even as it took place.. Maybe just crazy over thinking. Maybe worth considering. The documentary is called Room 237 on Netflix.
