In a exhaustive search for a treatment for my fathers encroaching diagnosed Parkinsons Disease I accompanied him to the Chinese Hospital in Morogoro in the centre of Tanzania, circa 1980. It was probably our third visit. The Chinese doctors were unfamiliar with Parkinsons, in fact all doctors at the time were and they were very interested by this challenge. On this day they had placed 3 or 4 very long needles in to the side of the top of his head and the points came out the other side of his head. I was becoming terrified because I wasnt sure whether the needles passed through his skull. They had attached electrodes to the needles and at one point they were able to control the speed of the oscillations of the tremor by an oscillating frequency or level of current. They seemed pleased, a bit of a eureka moment and then my Dad turned pale and fainted. I was on the verge of panic, I tried to communicate to the doctors but they spoke very little english and my fathers Chinese language skills werent any help as he had lost consciousness. I was trying to ask if the needles went through his skull and if it hurt and the doctor said he o.k., no hurt, no hurt... See... Then he took my left hand and swabbed near where the thumb and index finger tendons meet and deftly and painlessly placed the needle into a point there and then twisted it further until it it was inches in to the centre of my hand. I felt no pain and my hand seemed paralyzed. Then he removed it and said You see, no pain. It wasnt long before my father regained consciousness and a sense of calm replaced the swarm of panic. We discussed with the doctors about treatment and they said that although they were able to trace and even control the tremor they had no experience with treating this sort of condition and had no more options to explore at this point.
