In a friendly response to my friend Quest Loves call for artists - TopicsExpress

In a friendly response to my friend Quest Loves call for artists to be more socially responsible, I offer this. Why bother worrying about artists who have not the ability or inclination to create conscious music? The bigger question is our lack of supporting socially responsible artists while they are alive. We wanna be down with bullshit so bad we completely forsake the brothers and sisters that are actually putting in work. KRS, Talib Kweli, Jessica Care Moore etc... Who gives a shit what a ignorant ass skinny jean wearing rapper has to say? They cant even name rappers from the 90s. Let alone know anything of cultural and historical significance. We dont have to create new artist leaders, they are already here, just not at the Soul Train awards! I wrap this up with another quick story. When i signed to Atlantic Records in 1998, i was the new hot shit. My first two Ethnomusicolgy records were nominated for Grammys, during those years I watched most of my friends get their careers destroyed by dumb ass critics, So my record Ethnomusicology vol. 3 was almost completely about social injustice and the microcosm that is the music biz, after my release of my musical open letter called The Critics Song i suddenly went from new genius to persona non grata.....on Ethno vol 3, i recorded my version of Strange Fruit, that was 11 years ago, and the song was already 40 somethin years old when i recorded it, now tell me, has anything changed? Them leave sorry, tears, and Blood -Fela
