In a ideal world it would not take a film star to get the media focused on mental illness Rich or poor, depression is fatal. It disintegrates the human body. Disconnects one from their own spirit. Psych docs vaguely know you, dish out meds on top of meds till you dont even know who you are anymore. Ill never forget sitting on a plastic bed, in a cold room at a mental hospital. Powerless in paper scrubs. Staring down at my hands and feeling the chill void of not existing. I admit this because mental illness needs to be addressed as a human condition that needs nurturing, it needs awareness. Not only a better mental health system, but WE as humans need to know and understand that the people we connect with everyday are struggling with something on some level. If we can rid the stigma and judgment of mental illness and replace it with love, faith, and compassion; maybe, just maybe we can help prevent the approximate 750,000 suicide attempts per year.
