In a monastic order there is no such thing as retirement. When our ability to till the fields wains and our economic output stops, we are not cast aside hierarchically, rather we are valued more - as we have more time for compassion, wisdom and mentoring the young, all of which are regarded as far more important than mere economic output. Unfortunately, in the secular world ones economic position and ones earning capability all too often dictates ones position - and perceived value to society.
