In a recent blog article an admissions officer responded to a common question asked by students planning to apply to college. The students wanted to know what the admissions officer was looking for in the application essay. Most students by the end of their junior year have realized for one reason or another that writing what the teacher is looking for is the best way to succeed. They have written mostly analytical or opinion essays and mostly in the third person in an attempt to maintain objectivity. Students are rarely encouraged to write in the first person and express subjectivity. So when the admissions officer recommends that students not write what they think he wants to hear but rather write honestly and express themselves personally, students are often at a loss. They have had very little practice expressing their thoughts and feelings. As the next application season approaches, students would be well advised to practice writing honestly and in the first person.
