In a recent burglary in Waikiki on the 10 / 12 / 2014 ,my husbands great great uncles 1888 silver medal was stolen . He was a captain of a ship that sailed regally from England to south America , while at anchor at a port possibly RIO DE JANEIRO where he later died of a mosquito related disease . While at anchor along side a French ship , one of the French sailors fell over board , and could not swim and was drowning , my uncle dived of the deck of his ship and saved his life he was awarded the medal by the French government . The inscription is in French , it states , presented to Lieutenant Churnside for valour (they misspelt his surname on the medal )
