In a recent research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, they cited that there is no significant differences in the biochemical markers between two groups of dieters who were randomly assigned to either a high protein moderate low carb diet or a high carb moderate low protein diet, while fat was being fairly constant in both groups (about 20%). The study cited that both groups showed improvement in all biochemical markers such as fasting glucose, A1C, CRP, HDL, LDL, etc. The problem is that when nutrition and fitness enthusiasts try to read and utilize such research to prove a point, such as that you dont need to go very low carb or even moderately low carb, they usually miss some relevant information to us or them that is not relevant to those conducting the study. For instance, in this study, the authors primary goals was to look at biochemical markers and weight loss, etc. Even though weight loss was a bit higher in the high protein group (about 2 kg difference) they did not think of it as significant especially when you consider the difficulties or obstacles the low carbers run into trying to find alternative to breads, pasta, rice, etc and the feelings of being deprived, etc so their conclusion was something along the lines that both diets are EQUALLY EFFECTIVE when it comes to weight loss or improving biochemical markers of diabetes or metabolic syndrome. One very important aspect which was of insignificance to the authors, was the fact that those in the High Carb group lost more FAT FREE MASS (muscle tissue). This is very significant to ATHLETES, but not to Doctors, or Obese, Diabetic and Hypertensive individuals. Apparently doctors or clinical nutritionist overlooked the fact that losing Fat Free Mass could be detrimental on the long run especially and will certainly make a huge difference in the present since body composition will reflect such change. To give the authors some credit, they did mention that body composition was better among the high protein group, but nothing more and therefore I had to read the whole study and find out why. Bottom line, dont just read abstracts, please dont be that guy :) Oh and Yeah, High Protein Diets are better than High Carb Diets if you care about the way you look or about the hard earned muscles, otherwise suit yourself, eat whatever you want !!
