In all good conscience… How do people, who are not racist, justify this countrys treatment of asylum seekers?? Is it because… We need to stop the dangerous boat trips - Unless we can stop the wars & famine they are fleeing we cannot stop their desperation. We put them in further danger by towing & pushing them back to Indonesia. We diminish ourselves by attempting to compete with the cruelty they are fleeing to try & deter them. Theyre illegal? - Theyre not. It is not illegal to seek asylum, by boat or any other means, with or without paperwork. (But it is illegal not to process them) Theyre not real refugees? - They are. Over 90% are found to be genuine refugees in need of our protection. Theyre criminals or terrorists? - Theyre not. Asylum seekers are 40 times less likely to commit a crime than other Australians. Theres too many of them - There isnt. Relatively few arrive compared with other countries and the total number. Theyre queue-jumpers, they should go through the proper channels - There is no orderly queue for them to join. Less than 1% of the world’s refugees are resettled each year. It would take 188 years to process all of the worlds refugees. Its too expensive! They get more welfare than pensioners - They do not qualify for government support. The government has removed legal support, and provides dangerously inadequate medical support. But we are spending $2 billion a year detaining them overseas in conditions condemned by UNHCR & Amnesty.
