In an Australian first, 12 Australians today participated in an anonymous live kidney donation and transplantation exchange - the largest group of people to benefit from living donor matches at one time. We wish all 12 Australians the best in their post-surgery recovery and we pay tribute to the generosity of those who gave the incredible gift of a kidney today. We recognise the more than 80 transplant surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, transplant coordinators and other medical professionals across Monash Medical Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Austin Hospital. Todays historic exchange is part of the Organ and Tissue Authoritys Australian Paired Kidney Exchange Program. The Program is delivering great results for people who otherwise would have little chance of receiving a viable transplant.
