In an age, with incredible destructive power at the hand of man, maintaining peace and tranquillity in the world has never been more challenging than it is today. And most surprisingly, the world is incredibly peaceful today that mankind could only dream at any time in history. The following statistics (global average) assembled by Harvard professor Steven Pinker makes a incredible reading: 1) The number of people killed in battles has dropped by 1,000-fold over the centuries. 2) Before organized states originated in Europe, battles killed more than 500 persons per 100,000. 3) In 19th century France, war-death rate stood at about 70 people per 100,000. 4) In the 20th century, despite two world wars and a few genocides, such death rate was 60 persons per 100,000. 4) The rate of war deaths today (despite wars in Iraq and Afghanistan): 0.3 person per 100,000.
