In an email from a Friend - Macando books is closing I cant postpone this any longer. A sensible businessperson probably would not have prevaricated this long. I had hoped that this enormous cultural shift we are all experiencing would slow down, level off; that the novelty of e-readers and internet sales would fade, and that our little bookshop would survive what might have turned out to be just a not-so-little bump on an invariably rocky road. But there have been too, too many days in the past year when sales have been abysmally, shockingly, low. Our regulars, our beloved, stalwart, committed customers, have noticed the change. Many have asked for reassurances that we werent closing. Half pleadingly, half accusingly...You cant ever close, you couldnt possibly...unimaginable. I feel were letting all these people down, and Im sorry. But its different here now, quieter. We buy much more selectively, with caution. And with some discomfort and self-consciousness we offer less money for your books. Its not as much fun as it used to be. Its just not sustainable. And we are not in a position to subsidize a business not sufficiently supported by the community. So...this is how it will be. We will continue our current sale for another week or two. Every book will continue to be half price. Then, everything under $40 will be discounted by 60%, later 70%, still later 80% then 90%. Books $40 and up will remain 50% off. No clear idea exactly how and when it will stop. Like most second-hand bookshops we have had surplus inventory stored away, wherever we could find space. Its all coming out now and the shelves are still full. The antiquarian and collectible sections are bigger than they have ever been. However, the building will need to be sold, and before that, emptied. There are always changes to confront. We all adapt. Please come by and help us celebrate the last 36 truly wonderful years. Dont be shy, or mournful; and dont feel awkward. We would love to see you. And note...this is the ideal time to work on building your own library. Shelves of comfort and stimulation. Nothing can take the place of real paper books. I will continue to send e-mails to those of you on our list. You can also follow our progress on Facebook. Please help us out by sharing this news with anyone you think might be interested.(Not everyone is on our e-mail list or a Facebook friend). And a big heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us in so many ways throughout the years.
