In an emotionally draining yet simultaneously uplifting week at the White Privilege Conference, I could not have ended today with any better news. I honestly do not have words for how happy I feel in this moment. My dear-bratty, less attractive little brother, Andy Friggin Jessip called and modestly announced that he has been awarded the Matthew Shepard Scholarship. An honor so high within the LGBTQ community, I cannot tell you how proud I am of you, hermanito. Having to witness my little brother grow up in a world and community that is not always accepting or understanding, he found it within himself to replace hate with compassion and rooted his way into the handsome and loving young man he is today. I cannot tell you how many times Ive felt so weak and defeated here at UNI listening from 4 hours away at how severely bigoted and ghastly human beings can be due to mere rumors and lack of understanding. I never had an answer that I felt was sufficient enough until now. Im your sister, and you will ALWAYS be my baby brother, and this award is just further reasoning why you should NEVER EVER have to feel ashamed or isolated for standing up for who you are. Thank you so much Andy. Thank you for rising and continuing to be a leader and ally to all of those still on their way to finding the beautiful courage that you now possess. I can only wait to see what you contribute to University of Northern Iowa as a Panther this falI. I love you so much and am going to publicly squeeze the shit out of you when we see each other next (So dont you dare fight it) Also, FYI this in no way shape or form is a pass to forgetting my Birthday thats coming up (April 9th you punk).
