In an except from a letter written to the President of the United States in regards to the upgrade of the PUC. There is no question that the legendary and victorious Battle of Iwo Jima was conquered by determined, brave, unwaveringly heroic, and always faithful soldiers from the United States Marine Corp. On February, 19, 1945, the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion and their Marine brothers not only entered into a gruesome battle on D-Day, but they entered into an altruistic, binding, and sacred covenant—a covenant that can only be truly understood by soldiers who are banded together in combat as devoted defenders of democracy, freedom, and liberty. These are the cornerstones of America and the heart and essence of what separates our great nation from some of the others in the world. It is also equity, righteousness, and justice—core American values and principles underlying a government of the people, by the people, for the people—that separate these United States from others across distant oceans. Furthermore, it is indeed our ability, as the “sweet land of liberty,” to admit to mistakes that separates us from other nations, but it is also that very thing that unites humanity. The 133rd Naval Construction Battalion has been deprived for almost 67 years of meritorious recognition for their equal measures of extraordinary heroics and gallant actions. It seems obvious that the omission of even a belated, equitable acknowledgement was a mistake—possibly an administrative error and now a bureaucratic challenge. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz stated, “Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue. Perhaps what is needed today is the same spirit of valor and virtue among the bureaucratic hierarchy to concede that a grave mistake has been made. Now, a sacred and solemn obligation is necessary to right a wrong before what is left of our greatest generation is finally laid to rest. Please help to right an injustice by allowing the members of the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion to stand united, with dignity, banded together eternally in sharing with their Marines brothers one last, jubilant victory as fellow recipients of the Presidential Unit Citation. --by Vicki Murdock
