In ancient Israel people lit their homes with clay oil lamps. The lamp itself was a simple clay vessel. Its sole function was to hold olive oil and a wick. An empty clay vessel left the house in darkness, but filled with oil and lit with a flame, it would burn brightly and give off a light visible from a great distance. The oil and the flame enabled the lamp to fulfill its purpose and gave it meaning. We are clay vessels, meant to be filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit and burning with the flame of God’s love. “Let your light shine before others,” Jesus said, “that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16 NIV) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_lamp
