In another FB Navy group there was some grumbling about having to clean and take care of a ship. Some thoughts about that: During my last few years in the Navy I was occasionally assigned additional duty to AIRLANT or CINCLANTFLT to augment teams that would be inspecting ships in overhaul, or had problems, or whatever. One of the things that became quite evident to any experienced Navy person was how well we could determine the inspection was going to go even before crossing the quarterdeck. Sometimes even on the pier. And it was not how the hull looked, it was how the sailors looked. If we noticed sailors in sloppy uniforms, needing haircuts, and not even walking smartly there was surely trouble on that ship. Crossing the brow, how did the watch look, were they sharp and standing a smart watch? Was the quarterdeck clean? If those things were awry then one knew that the ship itself would be a mess,,,,, every time. And not surprisingly the sailors on those ships never seemed to be content or happy. Quite a contrast to a squared away ship in every way, especially the pride you would see in that ships sailors. Thoughts?
