In answer to a conversation on an amazing young womans profile, I put this wording together about why you shouldnt use the r-word. I think its even more important in light of the fact were walking with the local Best Buddies Indiana chapter in the morning. Please remember, friends, sometimes respect is something we give, not something thats a right, or that we have to earn. Heres why you dont use the r-word: Because when you knowingly use a word that causes people pain, that hurts their feelings, that demeans and stigmatizes an entire population of amazingly awesome and unique individuals, all it does is show that you dont care all that much about other people. Of course its your right not to care about other people. But what I really wonder is this: if you know a word hurts anothers feelings, why do you fight so hard for your right to use it, when the right thing to do would be to refrain from using it out of respect for someone you know, care about, or love. Would you fight so hard for the right if it hurt someone you love? Because just as you have the right to use whatever wording you want, you also have the right to treat people with the level of respect youd like shown to you.
