In anticipation of next weeks Black Truffle Dinner, did you know: Traditionally, pigs were used to hunt truffles because of their natural affinity for the fungi, however, because of their fondness for truffles, they were difficult to control once they had found the truffle. Pigs often would eat the expensive bounty they had just found. Dogs, being lighter, easier to manage, and more trainable, have largely replaced the pigs in the search for “Black Gold,” or the black Perigord truffles.
