In case anybody hasnt heard, there was a fatal dog attack in southern Ohio in the Cincinnati area...again, that was identified as a Pit Bull dog. First, what in the hell is going on in that region?!? This is happening just as repeals to BSL/BDL are being discussed in the surrounding area. Surely now, the fate of those attempts to repeal are in doubt, if they werent prior. However tragic it is when incidents occur like this, remember they are still very rare, even if they appear to be occurring more and more because of the attention given. In most cases, we will never know what exactly happened. We wont know if there were signs that led to this. We wont know what the temperament of that individual dog really was. We wont know what the environment was like. But, what we do know is, someone is now deceased, and a family is without a loved one. You have to keep that in mind when discussing this. This should not happen, and each time it does, we have failed somewhere. It doesnt change the fact that BSL is proven to be ineffective. Now, as far as what to do about this debate, heres the kicker...the proponents of BSL, AND the opponents of BSL (generally speaking, this is us) both make statements that wrap some truth around bullshit. It doesnt help. The truth is always somewhere in the middle. So, going forward, dont be a Pit Bull advocate, be a dog advocate, or an advocate for compassion to all living beings. The good news is you can still have your favorite, but you wont be confined to a group that is at times looked at as irrational, insensitive, or have an agenda to a type of dog that is not always accepted by the public or our political leaders. The reality is, if you got your dog from a rescue or shelter, you probably dont know the genetic makeup of your dog -- as it pertains to breed, anyway. Advocate responsibly and with compassion.
