In case yall didnt know, hummingbirds LOVE the rain...If youre trying to attract hummingbirds, or want to see how many you really have around, while its raining is the time to find out...If you cant get hummingbirds to come when its raining, then you really just dont have any in the area...and before somebody asks... I use a 2 quart plastic pitcher (make sure itll fit in your microwave) and I use a one cup measuring cup.....The actual one cup line is really about 1 1/2 inches from the top edge, so I cant give you an exact recipe unless you use the same thing or are really good at math and guess-timating...but I put 2 full cups (both almost all the way to the top edge...past the official one cup line) in the 2 quart pitcher and stir in hot water til its full (but not so full that I cant put it in the microwave without spilling it)...then I microwave it for about 3 minutes....people with city water need to do this part to help dissipate the chlorine in city water...I have a well, but I microwave it anyway to help the sugar dissolve good...Thats a LOT of sugar...No red color needed...You need to put the pitcher in the fridge and making it red will only lead to it being mistaken for Kool Aid...Only put a little in your feeder to start with, until you see how fast they go through it...but dont let it get empty or old or the hummers will go somewhere else. I wouldnt let it sit out there for more than a day or two...It doesnt take long for it to go bad in this heat...I have to fill the two big feeders every other day and the little 8 oz one twice a day...Thats their favorite one for some reason...Keep the feeder clean, but dont use any harsh cleaners because youll never get all the residue out of it...and I dont think it would take much to mess their tiny little bodies up.
