In case you hadnt heard, I am currently still in Canada. Bruce was denied re-entry into the US. It seems we were gravely misinformed about the immigration paperwork we needed. We had understood that his passport would allow him to stay in the States while we filed the Petition for Alien Relative paperwork, which would eventually get him a spousal Green Card. But apparently if you reveal these intentions to the border guard at customs, you become an Intended Immigrant and your passport no longer covers you. The US consulate has no one we can talk to. All we can do is make an appointment for a visa application, and that may be a four-week wait for the appointment alone. We have contacted two different immigration attorneys, but neither one has gotten back in touch with us yet. We are assuming that I will drive back to Florida, and Bruce will stay. He has, of course, already given up his apartment, so he will be left to the mercy of relatives—with no transportation, as his car and his cat and his belongings are now in Florida; the rest of his worldly goods are in my car. What a nightmare. We’re both cycling between frustration and panic at the way this is unfolding. And we continue to get conflicting information. For example, the border guard said that the moment we were married, we should have filled out a K-1 Visa form, which would have allowed him to enter the US. But the instructions on their website says that the K-1 Visa is for fiancés, not spouses, and is only if you intend to get married in the US, in a state that allows the marriage! This doesn’t apply to us, obviously, yet the border guard was insistent this was the proper procedure. So thats the scoop. No idea yet how long I or we will be here. Im hoping an attorney, once we actually speak with one, will have some more cogent information for us. We feel pretty helpless.
