In case you were wondering why we cant arrive at consensus on the issue of police overreach, heres exhibit A. Just read a New York Times editorial offering several solutions to lethal encounters with criminals. Among the suggestions: ignore crimes considered minor. Who decides what is minor (the writer, I suppose). Also, cops must just allow unarmed criminals to attack and kill them, because, according to pretty much the entire NYT editorial board, there can never be a justification for any lethal assault on an unarmed man... On the flip side... Black Americans are being asked to quietly comply with, among other things, stop and frisk procedures, traffic stops for DWB and assumed guilt in many otherwise benign encounters. And all of us are asked to tolerate increasing infringement on our basic human rights, including no-knock warrants that have, among other things, killed infants. Are there issues that need to be addressed? Absolutely. And now rather than later. However, you cant get there from here when extremists on both sides are asking folks to just shut up and take a beating.
