In celebration of Mothers Day, were sharing a personal post from a granddaughter of one of the girls of Atomic City, with a special note from The Girls of Atomic City author, Denise Kiernan: Books serve as conversational catalysts in myriad ways. Some of the most gratifying experiences I have as an author are when I hear that something I wrote has resonated with someone on a personal level. I am delighted every time a reader writes to tell me that they have uncovered new details about the life of a parent or grandparent as a result of reading The Girls of Atomic City. Imagine my surprise when—long before the book was released—my publicist, Justina Batchelor, told me that her grandmother had in fact been one of the “girls” who had lived and worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during World War II. Justina and so many others I’ve heard from since the book’s publication have found new appreciation for the stories of their family members, be they mothers or grandmothers, aunts or uncles. Justina has graciously shared her personal story here. Click through to read about Mildred Batchelor and Oak Ridge.
