"In contrast to models of cognitive dissonance that view dissonance processes as irrational and maladaptive (Aronson, 1969), the action based model views dissonance processes as adaptive. Of course, adaptive, functional psychological processes that are useful and beneficial in most circumstances may not be beneficial in all circumstances. Occasionally, dissonance reduction may cause persons to maintain a prolonged commitment to a harmful chosen course of action, when it would be better to disengage".
