In early 1963, both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held their respective awards ceremonies to recognize the best in film from 1962. At the 20th Golden Globe Awards Ceremony (held on March 5th, 1963), three awards were handed out for best film: one for best drama, one for best comedy, and one for best musical. There were 10 nominees for Best Film-Drama for 1962: The Chapman Report Days of Wine and Roses Freud “Hemingways Adventures of a Young Man” Lawrence of Arabia Lisa The Longest Day The Miracle Worker Mutiny on the Bounty To Kill a Mockingbird The Golden Globe went to Lawrence of Arabia. There were five nominees for Best Film-Comedy for 1962: The Best of Enemies Boys Night Out If a Man Answers Period of Adjustment That Touch of Mink The Golden Globe went to That Touch of Mink. There were also five nominees for Best Film-Musical for 1962: Billy Roses Jumbo Girls! Girls! Girls! Gypsy The Music Man The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm The Golden Globe went to The Music Man. (However, as I am not a fan of musicals, I am not currently including films from this category in my lists [unless they are also nominated in other categories].) At that same ceremony, there were 11 nominees for Best Director for 1962: George Cukor for The Chapman Report Morton DaCosta for The Music Man Blake Edwards for Days of Wine and Roses John Frankenheimer for The Manchurian Candidate John Huston for Freud Stanley Kubrick for Lolita David Lean for Lawrence of Arabia Mervyn LeRoy for Gypsy Robert Mulligan for To Kill a Mockingbird Martin Ritt for Hemingways Adventures of a Young Man Ismael Rodriguez for My Son, the Hero (Los Hermanos del Hierro) The Golden Globe went to David Lean for Lawrence of Arabia. At the 35th Academy Awards Ceremony (held on April 8th, 1963), there were five nominees for Best Picture of 1962: Lawrence of Arabia The Longest Day The Music Man Mutiny on the Bounty To Kill a Mockingbird The Oscar went to Lawrence of Arabia. At that same ceremony, there were five nominees for Best Director for 1962: Pietro Germi for Divorce, Italian Style David Lean for Lawrence of Arabia Robert Mulligan for To Kill a Mockingbird Arthur Penn for The Miracle Worker Frank Perry for David and Lisa The Oscar went to David Lean for Lawrence of Arabia. Adding these 41 films together, eliminating those nominated only for a Golden Globe for Best Film-Musical, and then removing any other duplicates leaves 22 movies on my list for 1962: The Best of Enemies Boys Night Out The Chapman Report David and Lisa Days of Wine and Roses Divorce, Italian Style Freud Gypsy Hemingways Adventures of a Young Man If a Man Answers Lawrence of Arabia Lisa (also called The Inspector) Lolita The Longest Day The Manchurian Candidate The Miracle Worker The Music Man Mutiny on the Bounty My Son, the Hero (Los Hermanos del Hierro) Period of Adjustment That Touch of Mink To Kill a Mockingbird Over the years I have seen The Longest Day, The Miracle Worker, Mutiny on the Bounty, and To Kill a Mockingbird; and since beginning this project, I have added three more to that list: Days of Wine and Roses, Lawrence of Arabia, and That Touch of Mink. Only 15 more to go!
