In effort to improve highway safety, the Connecticut state Senate - TopicsExpress

In effort to improve highway safety, the Connecticut state Senate has approved a new bill that would give illegal immigrants the ability to obtain a driver’s license. The new bill will require applicants to provide documentation that proves they have lived in the state for at least 90 days. Applicants must also undergo background checks and driving tests. Licenses would be marked specifically for driving purposes only and will need to be renewed every three years instead of six. While Democrats believe this bill will improve highway safety, Republicans believe that people who are in the country illegally should not have legal documents. The state of California had approved a similar legislation in which individuals without social security numbers will be allowed to apply for licenses. The bill will go into effect in January 2015.
