In films, theoretical physics consists either of talking in vague generalities or scrawling vast numbers of complex equations on blackboards. In reality, most of what is interesting about physics occurs between these two extremes. I sometimes worry that the portrayal of physics in the movies discourages would-be physics students by making it look like a field for lone geniuses rather than something that can be done by relatively ordinary people.
