In front of my home today a Pakistani man was shouting and screaming at his wife, who was walking two paces faster than him. She had 3 extremely scared young girls (aged between 3-4) with her. He continuously told her, come here, or im going to punch your two teeth out and then raced up to her and in an extremely aggressively manner told her, im going to smash your face in. The woman looked terrified, while her children, who were in tears, were shouting, daddy please dont do it. Lots of people drove past them and saw exactly what was happening, but did not utter a word to stop it. When I raised my voice to tell him to stop, he did not respond. Only God knows how many times he has threatened and even beaten his wife. When I called the police they told me that nobody had called in to report the crime. Alhumdulillah they were there within minutes but I do not know if they arrested him as they had moved into the next road. This is what was so shocking, that a man openly threatened to beat his wife up and nobody called in to report the crime. This reminded me of the bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility in the case of Kitty Genovese, who was stabbed to death in front of a number of people, yet nobody reported the crime because they thought somebody else would. If you see a crime taking place, and there are many witnesses, take responsibility and call the police. Do not leave it for somebody else. - Brother Amar Alam
