In grad school, one of my classmates and friend was a Sunni Muslim Kuwaiti Arab who was always trying to get my Irish Jewish friend to be a little less of a stereotypical get drunk and into a bar fight kind of Irishman and to be a bit more of a religious Jew from Ireland. Ali al Zubi also took it upon himself to try to help me learn more about my Jewish heritage. He wanted me to grow my peyots out and wear tsitsit and a keppah. He wore Israeli IDF commando desert boots and carried his books in an IDF paratroopers bag. He admired Israel for being a small state which was able to withstand all of its larger neighbors who were trying to destroy it, and he saw Israel as a model for Kuwait due to Kuwait being invaded by Iraq and having to have outsiders fight for its independence. He hoped that some day his home country could be as strong as Israel and be able to defend itself without help.
