In heavy rotation 50 years ago today: This week’s new releases - TopicsExpress

In heavy rotation 50 years ago today: This week’s new releases are not a strong selection, but they do demonstrate the incredible diversity that populated Top 40 radio in the mid 60s. Try to imagine both of these songs being played on the same radio station today. First we have “The Name Game.” It was the second of three novelty hits by Shirley Ellis (the others were “The Nitty Gritty” and “The Clapping Song”). I had always assumed she was from Philadelphia (solely on the basis of her reference to “The Broad Street Line”) but in fact she was from the Bronx. Everybody has some memory associated with this song. Here’s mine: In 1993 Deborah and I had moved to Washington, D.C., and Deborah was working with her step-sister Sharon at a company that “helped” people on disability insurance find new forms of gainful employment (often against their will). One of Deborah’s clients was a young man named Mohammed Shoshana. But Sharon always referred to him as “Banana Popana.” https://youtube/watch?v=2jfVpizj1Uk
