In his book The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (a Little) Craziness and (a Lot of) Success in America, Gartner argues that an often-overlooked temperament--hypomania--may be responsible for some entrepreneurs strengths as well as their flaws. Gartner theorizes that there are so many hypomanics--and so many entrepreneurs--in the U.S. because our countrys national character rose on waves of immigration. Were a self-selected population, he says. Immigrants have unusual ambition, energy, drive, and risk tolerance, which lets them take a chance on moving for a better opportunity. These are biologically based temperament traits. If you seed an entire continent with them, youre going to get a nation of entrepreneurs.
