In honor of International Hawk Migration Week this week, TRAC is teaming up with Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory and the WV Scenic Trails organization to host Hawks and Hiking on Saturday, September 20th from 10 AM until around Noon. The FREE event begins in the parking lot of Hanging Rock Observatory near Waiteville, Monroe County. (Directions to the site are on the website of Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory hangingrocktower.org) Come learn about raptor identification with Brian Hirt, or about getting involved with hiking and trail maintenance with Robert Shaw. TRAC will have live hawks and a peregrine falcon on display, giving visitors a chance to get more first-hand, up-close information about the raptors they will be seeing migrate past the Tower. SPECIAL ALERT!! We will be releasing a young broad-winged hawk at this event! The broadwing came in from White Sulphur Springs earlier this month. He is healed up and ready to resume his migration to Gauatemala, Brazil or even Peru. Come help see him off!! After the release, take the short hike to the tower and id some raptors yourself. Sept 22, 2013 was the biggest count at the Tower last year with 1591 raptors passing by. We expect Sept 20 to be just as big. Bring water, binoculars, a snack and wear hiking boots bring a camera if you like to take pictures. The hike to the Tower is less than a mile but uphill. The view is amazing.
