In honor of Veterans’ Day, WNYGS will be undertaking an important outreach effort during the month of November. Affectionately referred to as the WNYGS Veterans Memory Initiative, we are encouraging Society members and the community-at-large to preserve the stories and experiences of American service men and women by participating in the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project (VHP). Created in 2000, the VHP collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans. The project was specifically created “so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.” The collection includes first-hand accounts from World War I (1914-1920), World War II (1939-1946), Korean War (1950-1955), Vietnam War (1961-1975), Persian Gulf War (1990-1995), and the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present). Veterans’ stories are told through such items as audio and videotaped interviews, written memoirs, letters, postcards, v-mail, diaries, photographs, drawings, and scrapbooks. In addition, those U.S. citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories. By using a pen, a tape recorder, a video recorder, a computer, or a smartphone, you can help preserve the memories of a family member, friend, or a local veteran.
